Six-Sentence, Sixty-Second Shameless Self-Promotion aka Elevator Speech

SSP Basics

  1. State your name and the name of your business or organization.
  2. Tell what you do, offer, or provide.
  3. Explain what a GREAT referral is for you.
  4. Explain what a GOOD referral is for you.
  5. Share, belt out, dance, gesture, beam your tagline, memory hook, or slogan.
  6. Repeat your name and the name of your business or organization.

SSP Variations

  • For 2, focus on the area in which you want to grow your business at present.
  • For 2, share something new about your business, services or products that will be of particular interest to those hearing your SSP.
  • For 2, share a need or concern that you are hearing from your customers or clients.
  • For 2, share a special offer.
  • For 3 or 4, explain what a FUN referral is for you.
  • For a Thirty-Second SSP, use 1, 2 (shortened), 3, 5, and 6
  • For a Fifteen-Second SSP, use 1, 2 (one word if possible), 5, and 6

Practice, Practice, Practice

  • Write out your six-sentence SSP and time yourself reading it aloud.
  • Tighten your verbiage until you can read it at a comfortable pace in sixty seconds or less. You don't want to drone on and on so that others will wish that you would sit down and give them their turn.
  • Memorize your basic SSP. With the basics routine, it will be easier to adapt to the occasion.
  • Practice in front of a mirror to observe the naturalness of your face, stance, and hands. Yeah, I know. You probably won't do this, but it IS a good idea.
