II. FIRST EXCURSION

|
A metro ride to a hill on the west of Paris--named for an earlier defense of the city--brought us to La Defense, a great commercial-financial complex, one of Mitterand's grand projects. The spectacular arch, which houses offices, frames a view straight across suburban Neuilly to the famous Arch de Triomphe right
to the Place de la Concorde. We ourselves took that walk.
